Originally, the alpine hut was a small snack station. It was built by Othmar Kuhn in 1950 at the same time as Obertauern's first ski lift, the Plattenkar Tellerschlepplift. About 37 years later, the Mankei-Alm, owned by the Veit family of the Hotel Enzian in Obertauern, was built in place of the former hut. It owes its name to the marmots that scamper about on the Plattenkar mountain chain and which are called "Mankei" in Salzburg’s dialect.

Today the Plattenkar lift is a heated 8-seater chairlift – and the Mankei-Alm has also been extended and renovated since then. Obertauern's popular ski hut seats about 120 people inside and about 200 outside on the spacious sun terrace.

The heart and soul of the hut are hut manager Zvonimir Antunovic – better known as "Soki" – and head bartender Waltraud. Both have been connected with the history of the Mankei-Alm for decades.
